An unusual example of an antique painted Mongolian blanket box dating from the 19th century. This piece was made top opening for easy access to blankets and clothing.
Mongolian antique furniture is well known for it's exceptional painting, this style of paint work is only surpassed in quality by Tibetan antique furniture. This piece is adorned with paintings of dragons, birds, ducks, hanging fruits and the 'Jewel of Tibet' which is a reoccurring motif in Tibetan artwork.
This style of blanket chest is known in China as a 'kang chest' - a name given as it would have traditionally been placed at the end of the kang (stone bed) the Chinese slept on.
